Introducing The Nirvana: Washington Park's grunge rocker

The Nirvana, an eight-unit condo development located at 5408 S Michigan Ave in Washington ParkMany developers assign names to condo developments for purposes of branding, to differentiate a building from the rest of the pack. In some cases, such as “EcoLogic Lofts,” for example, the name is meant to indicate a salient feature of the project. Other names tell something about the location and its history, like “Lexington Park Condominiums,” which is being built on the site of the old Lexington Hotel.

Recently, it seems like every three-flat I come across has a name, and many of the names seem wholly disconnected from the buildings to which they are assigned.

Take this eight-unit brick building at 5408 S Michigan Ave in Washington Park, for example. The developer christened the building “The Nirvana,” not in hopes of appealing to the torn jeans-wearing, head-banging set, but instead because the building promises “serene & graceful living,” according to the MLS listing.

The street looks pleasant enough, but does this place really invoke the sort of peace of mind and “luminous consciousness” that its name suggests? It’s possible, but I’d be willing to bet that future residents won’t refer to their homes as “The Nirvana” when inviting their friends over for dinner.
