McGill Parc Townhomes' unfortunate past

McGill house

Some longtime Yo readers might recognize the above photo. It’s an old castle that was converted to a 62-unit condo building at 4938 S Drexel Blvd in Kenwood that Joel wrote about in 2006.

Since then, the site has changed considerably and that castle has acquired some neighbors. Now, these two townhouse developments, known as the McGill Parc Townhomes, flank the castle on either side:

The story behind this development is tragic on several counts.

According to Kimberly Chase-Harding, the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage agent marketing the development, all 10 of the McGill Parc Townhomes were under contract before construction began in late 2005.

Things changed in May 2006, when developer Gary Poter of Poter Construction & Development was stabbed to death by one of his employees. Gradually, every contract slipped away and the sales team had to start over again.

Before Poter’s death, there had been a waiting list for the project, and some of the three-story townhouses had easily fetched $650,000. Today, prices on some of the townhouses are down in the $490s, and eight of the 10 are still available.

I’ll try to follow up with a post about some of those available townhouses soon. For you adventurous types, there will be a Raiders of the Lost Ark theme party at the McGill Parc Townhomes on June 7th.
