Minority numbers on the rise in Hinsdale

Historic downtown Hinsdale, Illinois

From Homeward Bound – West:

The overall numbers are small, but the minority population in Hinsdale saw substantial percentage gains over the past decade. As reported by Trib Local:

Between 2000 and 2010, Hinsdale’s black or African American population rose 58.8 percent from 136 to 216. Its Asian-only population increased 38.6 percent from 777 to 1,077 and its Hispanic/Latino population went up 42.9 percent from 414 to 592.

African-Americans have had a presence in Hinsdale for more than 100 years, according to Census data. Chicago’s affluent western suburbs, in fact, appear to have been more integrated for a longer period of time than most comparable suburbs on the North Shore.

Some of the increase in the African-American population of Hinsdale may have come from Chicago, which has seen a marked drop in its Black population over the past 10 years.

Hinsdale schools or Chicago schools? No contest!
