MLK might have liked this prototype for an affordable North Lawndale home

Click for larger imageWe meant to mention this yesterday – the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s recent Learning from North Lawndale exhibition highlighted the fact that the neighborhood was a backdrop for Dr Martin Luther King’s civil rights and fair housing campaigns.

North Lawndale may once again be at the forefront of change: the Foundation sponsored an architectural competition that sought designs that would revitalize the neighborhood. Kim Nigro’s winning “Outside the box” entry is a template for affordable prefab homes that echo the forms and color of the neighborhood’s stately graystones. Let’s hope they get built.
