The 398-unit AMLI Lofts opened recently in the South Loop and a 469-unit apartment tower at 1000 S Clark St is targeting occupancy for late next year. Hundreds of additional units have been proposed for sites at 1001 S State and 1333 S Wabash.

Student housing is a major part of the residential market in the South Loop. Arc at Old Colony is slated to open soon at 37 W Van Buren. We’d consider that the Loop, although the building is marketing its location as South Loop.

The latest proposed development calls for 140 units and ground-floor retail on a site at the southwest corner of Clark and Harrison currently occupied by a multi-level parking garage. The project is being designed by Thomas Roszak Architecture. The new building would be immediately adjacent to Columbia College’s Dwight Lofts.

  • Well, they better hurry up and build them before Rahm’s new Affordable Housing Ordinance gets voted into law.

Joe, I would love to hear your take on this.

  • tup,

Every single aspect of our current approach to “affordable housing” is too horrible and perverted and corrupt to contemplate.

We spend too much to benefit too few. I’d like to see us as a society help more people and share the cost of doing so more broadly.

I’ll just leave it at that.
