More nail salons and hair braiding shops aren't the answer in Uptown, retail advocate says

We mentioned earlier that high property taxes deter some small businesses from opening in the Uptown neighborhood. Uptown United president and CEO, Joyce Dugan, says plenty of nail salons and hair braiding studios are interested in moving into Uptown but she thinks the neighborhood is oversupplied in that area.

How can these businesses afford the high property taxes? Dugan says she’s not sure how the nail salons afford them but she can see how the braiding studios stay afloat.

A typical hair braiding shop has about four chairs, “and they work sometimes way into the morning hours, and they make $400 to $500 a head,” Dugan says. “Each chair might generate $1,000 a day, so you can pay the rent.”
