According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Illinois ranked third among the states last year in the volume of mortgage fraud. Federal authorities have devoted some of their limited resources to bringing a number of well-publicized cases.
State and local authorities? If you follow local media reports, and national sites such as Mortgage Fraud Blog, you rarely see Illinois enforcement actions mentioned, and when you do, it’s almost always initiated by the feds. That’s not the case in many other states, where state regulators, attorneys general and local prosecutors have been far more aggressive in taking action against mortgage fraud.
