Neighbors Project party will encourage block parties

Neighbors Project, a nonprofit aimed at spurring people in their 20s and 30s to get involved in their local communities, is hosting a “Block Party Party” from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at The Mystic Celt, 3443 N Southport. The event is a kick-off for the group’s Web-based guide to throwing a block party. Local aldermen will attend, according to Mandy Burrell, Neighbors Projects’ Chicago board president.

Block parties are in line with the group’s mission to create grassroots energy within neighborhoods. Among the suggestions for condo owners on its Web site:

  • “Rehab, don’t demo, unless it’s an abomination. Whatever you build, make your neighbors proud to live next to your building.
  • Get rid of the fence in front of your building, or at least minimize it to make your building approachable.”
