New apartments proposed to replace Carmichael’s Steak House

Last week Michigan Avenue Real Estate Group sent notices to property owners neighboring Carmichael’s Steak House in the West Loop that it planned to seek zoning variances enabling it to build two 4-story apartment buildings with a total of 131 units.

The restaurant will be demolished as part of the plan, which contemplates building on the parking lot west of Carmichael’s and the park-like area (pictured) immediately east of the restaurant.

Proposed and active projects will add well over 1,000 apartments west of the Kennedy Expressway in the West Loop, an area that currently has fewer than 300 rental apartments. Michigan Avenue Real Estate Group projects alone total about 350 units.
