NewCity is a 19-story, 199-unit apartment tower at 1457 N Halsted St on the Near North Side. NewCity welcomed its first residents in July 2015.
The building is part of NewCity, a major development on an 8 ½-acre site bounded roughly by Halsted St and Clybourn Ave. NewCity includes 400,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, and an 1,100-car parking garage.
Confirmed tenants at NewCity include an 82,000 square foot Mariano’s, ArcLight Cinemas, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kings Bowl America, Z Gallerie, Yard House, Adobe Gila’s, Earl’s Kitchen and Good Stuff Eatery.
Bucksbaum Retail Properties and Structured Development are the developers. OKW is the architecture firm and Power Construction is the general contractor.
The apartments
NewCity has a mix of studio, convertible, 1- and 2-bedroom, 2-bath floor plans. There are 19 studios, 139 one-bedrooms and 41 two-bedroom apartments. All floor plans include private balconies.
The apartments have wood plank floors, 9-10 foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, designated tech-space and in-unit washer / dryers.
Kitchens have stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and expresso-colored cabinets.
Units include entryway counter and shelf space that can be used as a desk or as storage or decorative space.
Bathrooms in the units are a good size and include upgraded finishes compared to many newer buildings.
All units will be wired for Cat-6 cable throughout with backings installed for flat screen TVs.
Views. NewCity’s location affords it sweeping, uninterrupted views of the Chicago skyline to the north, east and south.
Amenities, services, policies
NewCity has a similar level of amenities as other newer buildings. NewCity’s 4th floor outdoor amenities include a deck with a pool, grilling area and lounge with fire pit.
Additional building amenities include a dog run, theatre room, conference room, cyber cafe and 24-hour fitness from with WELLBEATS fitness classes. The building has Pressbox, a dry cleaning valet service
The building has 24-hour door staff and on-site maintenance and management. Free wi-fi is included in all of the buildings amenities.
On-site reserved parking, storage lockers and bike storage / repair is available to residents.
The location
NewCity’s location is easily misunderstood because of the density of auto-oriented retail development in the Clybourn Corridor. It’s a far more pedestrian-friendly and interesting venue than is apparent at first blush.
Shopping.
Grocery shopping for residents is extremely convenient. There is a 82,000 square foot Mariano’s in NewCity which opened this fall.
Whole Foods’ Lincoln Park store is two short blocks west of NewCity. It’s not, of course, in Lincoln Park. The store spans 75,000 square feet and was the third-largest Whole Foods in the world when it opened in 2009.
The immediate area, i.e. the Clybourn Corridor, offers an incredible and growing array of retail options, from national brand big-box stores to small boutiques, all within a short walk of NewCity.
A sleek Apple Store is at Halsted and North Ave.
Dining, nightlife, entertainment. NewCity residents will have a number of dining and drinking establishments on-site, and they’ll find a wide selection of additional options in the immediate area, ranging from the casual to the formal.
Casual venues steps from NewCity include Sully’s House and Burger Bar Chicago.
Dive bar aficionados will love the proximity to Weeds, a short stroll, stumble or crawl from NewCity.
The Steppenwolf and Royal George theatres are a few blocks from NewCity.
Parks, recreation. Stanton Park is just south of NewCity.
Transportation. Public transportation is excellent. The CTA Red Line stop at North Avenue connects to the Loop and to Wrigley Field, US Cellular Field, and points further north and south. CTA bus routes frequently traverse Halsted St and North Ave.
NewCity has convenient access to I-90/94 via North Ave. At peak hours and on weekends, however, travel can be tediously slow due to the local retail density and Lincoln Park and North Avenue beach traffic.
There’s a Zipcar location a block west. A DIVVY bike station is a block northwest.
