Every time we drive through the Cabrini-Green section of River North, it seems more and more of the neighborhood’s notorious public housing structures have fallen under the wrecking ball. This building is being torn down across the street from the site of the mixed-income condo and townhome community, Parkside of Old Town (pictured), and adjacent to Helmut Jahn’s 96- unit River North SRO, which Yo reader np helped us identify. MCL Companies‘ Old Town Village West (pictured inside) is nearby, as is North Town Village, one of the pioneering developments in the CHA‘s Plan for Transformation. The area may even see a new high-rise, and all of the new developments being built on this land provide a fraction of public housing. In ten years time, with all of this new development, will “Cabrini-Green” call to mind more images of successful integration than frightening recollections of the Candyman?
