Proximity to the lake and its beaches is a valued amenity for many Chicago homebuyers, and it’s one that many developers are willing to stretch the truth about. The new, 30-unit condo development Welbourn Row, located at 2933 N Clybourn Ave, is about three miles from the lake, but their web site promises “…the cool breezes of the lakefront [are] within reach].”
Vague terms like “within walking distance” and “steps from” are perfect examples of how clever advertisers can manipulate language to make something sound more appealing. For instance, if I had a degree in marketing, I could turn a 200-square-foot garden studio out by O’Hare into something “cozy and private, perfect for a busy professional, close to transportation, with a lovely view of a beautiful garden.”
Oh, and it’s only steps from the lake.
