Old Lincoln Square

The venerable Old Town School of Folk Music threw its annual holiday party Sunday night at Martyrs’, which is about a mile down Lincoln Avenue from the School’s newest home.

That “new” home, by the way, is getting to be an “old” home. Who would have thought that when the School moved a large part of its operation from 909 W Armitage in Lincoln Park to Lincoln Square in September of 1998 that this new neighborhood would become what it has?

And while we’re at it, Ray Quinn opened Martyrs’ in a neighborhood that is known as North Center, near the Lincoln/Irving Park/Damen intersection, long before there were Blockbuster and Starbucks signs anywhere in sight. It just goes to show you: Where there is cheap rent, there is music.
