Old Town’s Cobbler Square joins the Craigslist Apartment Cleanup

Cobbler Square has joined the growing roster of properties and management companies supporting the Craigslist Apartment Cleanup, a campaign whose goal is eliminating all illegal rental service advertising at Craigslist, Trulia, Zillow, hotpads and other websites.

Cobbler Square transformed 30 factory and warehouse structures built between 1880 and 1965 into five interconnected buildings housing nearly 300 loft apartments, and spurred the revitalization of Wells Street and Old Town. When it opened in the mid-80s, Pulitzer-prize winning architecture critic Paul Gapp called Cobbler Square a virtuoso exercise in adaptive reuse.

Cobbler Square offers newly-renovated studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in 42 different floor plans. The apartments are true lofts, with 12-foot and higher ceilings, large windows, exposed brick and timber beams, and flexible, open living spaces. Common-area amenities include soaring enclosed atriums, a rooftop sundeck with Jacuzzi tub and skyline views, a game room, a business center, a club room for entertaining, a fitness center and on-site I-GO and zipcars.

The popularity of Cobbler Square and its Old Town location have resulted in 100s of (soon-to-cease) rental service ads on Craigslist, many of them containing stale or inaccurate information, and some designed to bait-and-switch renters into less desirable alternatives. If you want to find what’s for rent at Cobbler Square, a single click will tap you into accurate, near real-time information about available units.

I hadn’t been to Cobbler Square since our offices were above the Fudge Pot on Wells Street – and that was 20 years ago. I stopped by yesterday for a look at the changes when the complex was updated 3 years ago. The lobby and the game room now sport large, colorful artwork evoking the funky vibe that made Old Town a thriving tourist destination in the 60s and 70s.

The fitness center has been substantially expanded. The interior courtyards, one of which is pictured above, remain attractive spots to lounge or meet fellow residents.

I took a brief look at a large one-bedroom loft and will head back next week for a video tour.
