2903 S Union Ave, Chicago

“Luxury in Chicago means anything over $3,000 a month,” says CNBC. With that in mind, I spent part of my afternoon searching for homes listed right at that $3,000 threshold. Amidst dozens of listings accompanied by high-rise photographs, this little guy at 2903 S Union Ave in Bridgeport certainly stood out.

“Little guy” isn’t even that accurate: it has 3,600 square feet, three bedrooms, and 2.5 baths spread out over two above-ground floors and a basement, plus a two-car garage off-alley, but c’mon, don’t tell me the home doesn’t look kinda lost.

The home features a recently updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, polished marble tile throughout the first floor, oak staircases leading to the basement and second floor, a second kitchen in the basement, private balconies off two bedrooms, and a natural gas hook-up for a grill in the back yard.

Too old school to join the “renting rich”? Just buy it outright for $499,000, $50,000 below its 2006 sale price.

  • Hard to see how that home, on a 25 x 100 lot, has 3,000 square feet – unless you include the finished basement.

    It’s also interesting to note the “second kitchen” language re the basement. That’s often code for “illegal rental unit.”

  • Funny how it gains 600 square feet between the for-sale listing (3,000sf) and the rental listing (3,600sf).

    Don’t know if anyone caught it, but there’s what appears to be a standard orange stop-work order on the front door in the Google Street View snapshot. Click the image at top for a closer look.

  • Well, I have to say that it would have been better to build a 2-3 story house that went directly up to the lot line to mimic the neighboring buildings. Say 20 feet wide, 60 deep, and a ‘”gracht” in back.* Could have had 3600 sq ft over a basement.

    gracht=garage

    This is really out of place.

    Looking at the street on Google Street View shows most of the buildings on the block going right up to the front lot line.
