Park Millennium – from buyers lined up outside the building to bargain rentals

Six years ago Yo was writing this about the Park Millennium, a 52-story condo conversion at 222 N Columbus Dr on the New East Side:

Carrie McCormick of Centrum Properties, which is doing the conversion and selling the units, tells us Centrum is averaging 49 sales a month. The project has been selling since April 2005, and 465 of the 480 units have been snapped up, McCormick says.

Buyers are lined up outside the building each morning, waiting for the sales center to open, and there are so many eager buyers that Centrum had to hire a tour guide to take groups of people around the building, rather than giving them the usual individual inspections.

It’s been a while since new condo projects in Chicago have had job openings for tour guides, and the excitement surrounding this full-amenity building has dulled to the point where you’ll occasionally find bargain-priced rentals there.

A 2-bedroom, 2-bath corner unit, for example, just came on the market for $1,950 a month – the price of some nearby studio apartments.

The unit has floor-to-ceiling windows, a split-bedroom floor plan, and the obligatory granite countertops and in-unit washer dryer. The master bedroom is a true suite, with two walk-in closets and a spacious bath with a separate linen closet, but no stall shower.

Eight units are currently offered for rent at Park Millennium. One-bedrooms start at $1,550 and 2-bedrooms range up to $2,450.
