When I stopped by on Friday, crews were busy putting the finishing touches on the exterior of 544 Oak at Parkside of Old Town, one of the new buildings on the former site of the sprawling Cabrini-Green housing project.
According to Holsten Management‘s website, 544 Oak is slated for December 2011 occupancy and is accepting applications for market-rate rents of $975 to $1,275 per month. The 7-story controlled-access elevator building will be handicapped-accessible and have a laundry room.
Cable-ready units will be air-conditioned and include dishwashers, hardwood and vinyl flooring, balconies or terraces and window coverings. Garage and surface parking will be available.
If the view from street level is any indication, the units will enjoy great skyline views to the east.
Munchies on Larrabee and Green Oak Food & Liquor are directly across the street from 544 Oak.

Thanks to my tax dollars, druggies on disability (or DOD for short) get to live in a nicer apartment than I do.
Oh, and the world still gets to see their ire, I’m sure.
tup,
This is largely a market-rate building. You’re welcome to move in.
Please focus on the real estate.
” and Green Oak Food & Liquor”
So people who live in the market rate apartments do not eat and consume alcohol?
“druggies on disability (or DOD for short)”
The people living in the public housing components are carefully screened. Drug users are excluded.
It is the 1% who get to live in a lot nicer apartments than you do. The reason that the standard of living of the people in the middle is stagnating is because larger and larger shares of the economic pie are going to the 1%, and not because of programs to provide decent housing for the working poor.
I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something. Please someone tell me if I’m missing something. A brand new building. 2 bedroom unit with laminate wood floors, granite top, and awesome views for 1275/month in a pretty strategically located area. the rush street scene is in walking distance, north ave shopping is approx 1 mile away. and minutes from the loop. i understand there will be subsidized units, and low income units. But it seems they screen pretty well. The area doesn’t seem like there is lots of “riff raff” around. i drove around the area quite a bit. To me it just seems like a great deal. I think i will move in. Please somebody let me know if im missing the bigger picture here because it sounds like a good deal. I dont know…
josh,
i just purchased at the 511 w. division building. the price is definitely worth it.
josh,
I’d say you have a pretty good grasp of the big picture.
I know I’m just nitpicky, but I don’t like that you can see the exposed sprinkler pipes in the units from the street.
