Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” but it was Chicago Housing Authority CEO Sharon Gist Gilliam (second from left) who said, “The journey of 760 condo and townhome units on 20 acres begins with a single shovelful of dirt.”

Okay, she didn’t really say that, but damn it would have been poetic. Parkside of Old Town, the mixed-income community we’ve been telling you about since the summer, broke gound Dec. 7 on a site where Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Several other developments are already in various stages of construction in the area, and the first Parkside residents are expected to move in a year from now. Condos are priced from the $200s, and townhomes are priced from the $550s.
