Price meltdown at Renaissance on Kimbark

I’ve made many visits to Woodlawn over the years, despite sharing the common perception that it was “a community of last resort.”

Five years ago, when parts of Woodlawn appeared to be on an uptick, our then-editor Joe Askins shot a number of videos in Woodlawn at several phases of a project called the Renaissance on Kimbark.

In July of 2009 Joe and I walked the 6500 block of S Kimbark, a block that appeared to be about 2/3 vacant land. We paused for a look at a project that was stalled out, and stopped at 6531 S Kimbark, one of the Renaissance on Kimbark buildings which still had units for sale. We then drove past the 6613-6615 Renaissance on Kimbark building that won a 2009 Good Neighbor Award (pdf) from the Chicago Association of Realtors.

Unit 4 at 6615 S Kimbark is the first of the 8 units in the building to hit the resale market. The 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo was purchased for $260,000 in August of 2008 and went into foreclosure in November of 2011. It’s been on the market for just over 2 months now, and the asking price is $154,900.
