The Tribune’s Dawn Turner Trice recently visited North Lawndale with Marcus Betts, a resident who’s optimistic about the neighborhood’s future. According to Betts:
People drive through and see the vacant lots, the boarded-up buildings or hear about the crime, and I just don’t think communities like Lawndale get enough credit for being as sophisticated or diverse as they really are. The people here are not monolithic.
