What a shame that “Hyde Park needs a supermarket.” For years they’ve HAD one – the Co-op, and a darned good one until a few years ago. I lived in HP in the 1990’s, was a member, and enjoyed the special perks and excellent service that were the hallmarks of the Co-op for decades. At first I was disappointed that Jewel, etc. did not have a store in HP (you had to go way south on Stony to find one) but the Co-op was easily its equal and them some. Too bad their hubris got the better of them – they overexpanded into two locations that ultimately proved unprofitable. (Although the 47th St. store in its heyday had a very impressive array of goods.) Hail and farewell (?) Hyde Park Co-op!
All the co-op “haters” are going to be sorry when NOTHING replaces the co-op. HP-Kenwood doesn’t have ‘it’ to get a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods (both of which are really specialty stores) and why would Dominicks or Jewel (or WF) open a store there when Hype Parkers already drive further than any suburbanite would to shop at the stores on Roosevelt – especially when there is a closer Dominick’s in South Shore? They would have been there already if there was a market.
BTW I see that Yo! missed the good news that Solstace looks to be moving forward on 56th Street.
FG,
I’m guessing you’re referring to Hyde Park Progress’ Nov 20 report on Solstice on the Park, the new Jeanne Gang-designed high-rise proposed for 56th and Cornell.
To hear the Progress tell it, neighbors have responded enthusiastically to the project. You can read the story by clicking here.
I feel a Trader Joes would do well in HP, especially in that central location of the co-op. It’s a smaller store concept and would appeal greatly to the student population and bring some zing to the area.
Seriously, I can’t go anywhere-ANYWHERE- without people talking about Trader Joes (out of state as well). They could do well on the Moon. And, since the Moon is made out of cheese, they’d have dairy covered.
Why wouldn’t a smaller “specialty grocer” (even though Trader’s has all the staples including cheap wine for all the broke Grad Students) do well in HP? Just wondering. You’d be surprised how a quality product can attract the market that has shunned the co-op.
Trader Joes, among other great stores, has made co-ops obsolete.
Personally, I’d rather see Treasure Island than Trader Joe’s in the Co-op space. When I was a patron of the Co-op it always struck me as “Treasure Island South” with all the Euro-chic cachet that implies.
