Kate Hawley is leaving YoChicago tomorrow (Pearl Harbor Day), and Patrick Rollens will become the new managing editor of YoChicago and New Homes Magazine.

In the video above, Kate introduces Patrick and they talk briefly about his passion for green building and the environment. In the second part of the interview, Patrick talks about green building in Chicago and about the piss-poor reception the city has given to waterless urinals.

We’ll miss Kate, but she’ll still be with us off and on as a freelance writer. Look for her take on lofts in the February 2008 issue of New Homes Magazine.

  • I believe the Museum of Science and Industry is going that way, or at least that they are looking into it.

  • The Tribune article about that Lincoln Square eminent domain meeting noted that there were about 300 attendees, so my on-screen estimate was a little low.

  • Actually, waterless urinals can be better-smelling and more hygienic than conventional urinals. Technology.

  • Patrick,

it just seemed like there were 300 people there. They just got back from the Chicago Brauhaus and were engorged on meat products covered in gravy.

  • Looking at the picture Patrick has in a later post, it seems his originial 60 to 100 estimate was a lot closer to the actual attendance than the 250 / 300 the Sun-times / Trib estimated.

  • Water-saving options are not necessary in a water rich city like Chicago. We aren’t anywhere near draining Lake Michigan, so spending money to save water just to look “green” is a waste. In Phoenix, its a different story and I’m sure waterless urinals more than pay for themselves.

  • Pete – your comment is remarkably short-sighted. Over the next 50 years, water will become one of the most coveted natural resources, and Chicago has a responsibility to safeguard and conserve our remarkable assets.
