You wouldn’t have guessed it by the lines snaking down the sidewalk on West Adams Street lately but The Berghoff Restaurant, a Chicago icon, is closing. The owners are retiring and apparently their daughter will use the space to house her catering business. It was a good run, 107 years, but it ends on Feb. 28.
For anyone who can’t bear to live without the restaurant’s old world German fare, the Berghoff Cafe at O’Hare will remain open. But dinner in an airport is never as great as it’s made out to be. First Marshall Field’s, now The Berghoff. What’ll they think of next for the Loop–tearing down the Picasso?
