Solar Verde breaks ground on 20 green houses on far South Side

Devotees of green building might want to check out Solar Verde, Schmidt Luxury Homes‘ development of 20 single-family houses that broke ground in mid-April at 9560 S Marquette Ave. Solar panels on the roofs are designed to generate 4,000 watts of electricity – enough to heat the 1,600-square-foot homes and then some. Owners can sell the excess power back to ComEd (for an explanation of how it works, check out CBS 2’s recent video segment).

The two-story, 1,600-square-foot homes have three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Prices start at $339,000 and can go as high as $375,000 with upgrades, according to Sandra Guthrie of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, which is marketing the project. All of the homes are available, she says.

We’ll post a rendering of these traditional, bungalow-like houses, designed by A Design Consulting, when it becomes available in the coming weeks.
