Soldier Field revamp "innovative"

soldierfieldLove it or despise it, the always controversial makeover of Soldier Field has officially been declared “innovative architecture” by a panel of tastemakers drawn from the worlds of architecture, development and philanthropy.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation has bestowed on the Chicago Bears Football Club and the City of Chicago the award of 2005 Patrons of the Year. The award recognizes groups that have “underwritten and fostered imaginative architecture and risk-taking that contributes to the Chicago skyline and the city’s economic development and aesthetic identity”. The Foundation apparently solicits nominations from the architectural community and the general public each year, then puts them to an independent panel. The Soldier Field and Burnham Park redevelopment beat out contenders like the Bank One Plaza redevelopment, the Lakeshore East mixed-use development and the Wrigley Global Innovation Center.

So we want to know what you think. Monstrosity or bold, visionary venture? Has the revamp, which some have likened to a UFO perched atop the Coliseum, grown on you?
