SOM, Sasaki picked for South Works site

Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Sasaki Associates Inc. have been picked to design the master plan for redevelopment of the 284-acre site that was home to U.S. Steel Corp.’s South Works plant, on the South Side.

The massive mixed-use development will include new housing and retail components as well as a marina. U.S. Steel shuttered the plant in 1992 and recently agreed to sell the land to a joint venture of McCaffery Interests Inc., Westrum Development Co., and Lubert-Adler Real Estate Funds.

Solo Cup Corp. already has plans to build a $100 million factory on a 118-acre parcel on the site’s southern end. The South Works land could hold more than 4,000 residential units in addition to retail and other uses.
