Shingle installation

The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association is putting the finishing touches on a fully renovated green model bungalow at 7622 S Cregier Ave in South Shore, says Assistant Director Faith Foley. When completed, the home will feature a restored interior, solar thermal panels for hot water generation, a tankless water heater, new air sealing, proper insulation, and landscaping that’s both “historically appropriate and environmentally sound,” according to the association’s website.

The project is part of the HCBA’s latest Green Bungalow Block event, in which as many as 20 bungalows in the 7500, 7600, and 7700 blocks of South Cregier with new insulation, air sealing, and other energy efficient materials. The association has also improved blocks of homes in Belmont-Cragin, Auburn Gresham, and Chicago Lawn.

Approximately 10,000 bungalows have been certified through the HCBA, which has administered the city’s Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative since its launch in 2000. Under the initiative, certified homes can qualify for energy$avers grants to fund greening and weatherizing projects.

The South Shore model home and neighboring homes on Cregier Avenue will be open for touring later this summer, Foley says.
