Spend Mother's Day at North Shore open houses

775 Sunset Ridge Rd, Northfield, Illinois

But start the day by treating mom to a lavish Mother’s Day brunch at a MIBS-Approved venue. Pop the cork on some Mother’s Day champagne and, who knows, mom may pop for some extra help with the down payment.

In the dim, distant past (say, 2008 and beyond) real estate agents didn’t host open houses on Mother’s Day. Expensive print ads were needed to bring people out and too few people were paying attention on that day. That was, at least, a credible rationale for real estate agents, many of them moms, to enjoy a rare day off.

Open houses are now on the Internet, cutting the cost of advertising to near zero. And the market has been heating up on the North Shore recently, creating a sense that every day may be the mother of all opportunities to strike a deal.

I found more than 80 North Shore open houses listed at Prudential Rubloff’s Web site, at prices ranging from $125,000 to just shy of $5 million. In the not so distant past agents didn’t hold open houses at $5 million dollar homes either.

I’ll be out visiting open houses on Mother’s Day and perhaps we’ll meet in the master suite (pictured above) at 775 Sunset Ridge Rd in Northfield, which is open from noon to 2. It features 6 bedrooms, 4 ½ baths, a 3-car garage and is priced at $1,950,000.
