Take advantage of Chicago housing market slowdown to negotiate better upgrades

Home inspector Tom Corbett, who writes New Homes Magazine‘s monthly “New Construction Corner” column says that now is the time for buyers to ask developers to throw in higher quality finishes and fixtures for free.

Ask the developer to install solid wood or solid core doors throughout your prospective new home, Corbett says. Most developers provide a high quality front door but many skimp by providing hollow core interior doors, he says. Corbett also urges buyers to opt for brass bathroom and kitchen fixtures rather than plastic, saying they are more durable and easier to repair. Corbett will provide more tips on this subject next month in the March issue of the magazine.
