Talking about Winnetka teardowns

Last week I met developer Gary Gries for a walk-through of a newly-built home at 1093 Elm St in Winnetka (video). We then chatted a bit about the teardown phenomenon in Winnetka.

According to a recent study (pdf file), nearly 10% of Winnetka’s homes were torn down and rebuilt from 1996 to 2003. Although activity has slowed recently, our Winnetka teardown map illustrates the scope of the activity in 2006 and 2007.

In most parts of Chicago new construction is sharply different from the older buildings. Not so in Winnetka where, after a new home has been standing for a few years, it’s hard to distinguish from its older neighbors. You can see more Winnetka new construction at WinnetkaNow.
