The courtyards of Rogers Park

Larry Shure, a preservation planner with the City of Chicago, has begun a fascinating project cataloging and categorizing the courtyard buildings of Rogers Park at his Ultra Local Geography blog.

Shure has mapped the neighborhood’s 200-some courtyard buildings, graphed their distribution by type (U-shaped court, L-shaped court, etc.), logged the years in which they were built (the 20’s were the boom years for courtyards) and focused on how courtyard development changed the density of Rogers Park.

A hat tip to Rogers Park in 1,000 words for calling our attention to Shure’s site.

I looked at some of the advantages of courtyard buildings in the above video with Dan McDonough of Planned Property, one of our sponsors.
