WBEZ has surfaced a video from 1940 sketching the master plan for Chicago’s “superhighway” and subway systems.
You can either lament or celebrate the crosstown (north / south) highway and subway systems that never came to pass.
In the nearly 20-minute video you can watch the sinking of the tubes that carry the Red Line under the Chicago River, and catch a glimpse of the electric streetcars that were once part of one of the largest street railway systems in the world.
