The first-time buyer: smells like trouble

I intended to chronicle my path to homeownership in a fairly linear fashion, working my way through my experiences of the last few months rather than talking to you in real-time. But I need your opinion on something, so all fingers on keyboards please.

Would you buy a condo in a building where the common hallway on your particular floor was very smelly? By smelly, I mean some sort of cooking that really doesn’t smell like good food once it has mixed with the stagnant air of the common area. The smell doesn’t seep into the condo so long as the door is closed. The smell is apparent in the morning, but apparently not in the afternoon. The evening? I can’t say. There’s probably nothing I can do about it. There’s no exhaust in the hallway on this particular floor and we’d have to persuade condo owners on other floors to pay for one. Unlikely.

The smell made me gag, but at least the unit is close to the elevator. I want to hear from both women and men, as I know the female of the species is more sensitive to odors than its male counterpart. I need your opinions, your experiences, your thoughts on resale and any amazing remedies that combat odors or inspired ways to convince a person to stop stinking up a shared area. Is it a deal-breaker?

Friends, countrymen, lend me your noses.
