The 4th of July parade has long been a big deal in Evanston, and this year’s event is expected to be no exception, with about 140 groups expected to participate. The parade route along Central Street passes through a neighborhood that would please most confirmed urbanites.
The parade begins at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 4th. If you’re thinking of arriving early to stake out a good vantage point, forget it. Marking turf along the parade route is as much a blood sport in Evanston as snow dibs is in Chicago. City ordinances prohibit chairs along the parkways prior to 6 a.m. on July 1, but that date has passed. A typical scene:
