New homes, condos booming in Larrabee corridor

A stroll down North Larrabee Street between Division and Chicago these days shows how far the section of River North just east of the river has come. An incredible amount of new development has sprung up in the once rundown neighborhood, and Larrabee is one of the busiest corridors. River Village Pointe (above), under construction at 906 N Larrabee St, will contain 100 condos priced from the $240s.

This old building sits right across the street.

The Larrabee (above left), with 72 condos priced from the $210s, is under construction at 865 N Larrabee St. In the background, The Montgomery is the conversion of an office tower at 500 W Superior St. The old Montgomery Ward headquarters, designed by World Trade Center architect Minoru Yamasaki, has been converted into a 249-unit residential tower by Centrum Properties.

A couple blocks north, Old Town Village West sits at Larrabee and Elm streets, on the site of the Chicago Housing Authority’s former Francis Cabrini Extension North. The development has condos from the $300s and townhomes from the $600s as well as 38 CHA replacement units. A remaining tower at the CHA’s Cabrini-Green project looms in the background.
