During the media tour of the Winthrop Club in Evanston, the topic of green construction and LEED certification came up over and over again. I talked to Winthrop Properties principals Bob Horner and Ibrahim Shihadeh and FitzGerald Associates principal Michael DeRouin throughout my visit about their decision to pursue LEED Gold certification for this high-rise and how they plan to incorporate green building into future plans.

  • Would the editor or anyone else know the current status regarding sales in the Winthrop Club and why the building still looks empty? I work nearby and am curious whether talk of it becoming rentals is true. Winthrop Club is a very nice building and rental prices in downtown Evanston are very high with the average rental in towers nearby in the 2,000’s, and with a strong Northwestern University student base, the builder must be looking at all options. If this is still a condo only building, I have a co-worker who is now interested in buying.

  • Morgan:

If I remember correctly, the developers said during the media tour that the building is 30 percent sold. There was no talk from the developers about converting to rental.

  • Thanks, this is good to know and I will pass the information on to my co-worker. Are buyers unable to close because banks will not fund loans until a larger percentage of units are sold? OR is the buiding not finished on the inside although it looks completed on the outside? This place is very attractive and has interested many people at my workplace and I am sure they will appreciate the video tours that are posted on this site.
