Crain’s Chicago Real Estate Daily is reporting that Related Midwest has selected “renowned New York architect Robert A.M. Stern” to design a high-rise on a site at the southwest corner of Peshtigo Ct and Grand Ave.
Crain’s notes that “Mr. Stern’s firm has never designed a high-rise built in Chicago.” The writer makes no mention of the fact that Stern did design a 15-story high-rise for a site in the 400 block of Grant Pl in Lincoln Park in the late 1980s. The site, just west of Clark St, had been the home of the UHF Channel 44 studios.
I was shown renderings of the stone-clad tower at the time by the development team, and recall a gorgeous neo-classical building designed to be built as-of-right within the existing zoning. It came as no surprise that neighborhood opposition resulted in the site’s downzoning and the project’s death.
