The Van der Rohe is a 15-story, 213-unit apartment high-rise at 2933 N Sheridan Rd in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.

The building was built in 1951. The architects for the building were Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Pace Associates. The Van der Rohe is managed by Group Fox Property Management.

The apartments

The Van Der Rohe has 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments. Floor plans and near real-time rent and availability info are online.

Apartments in the building have been recently updated and have floor-to-ceiling windows and hardwood floors throughout. The units have ample closet space compared to many newer buildings. One-bedroom floor plans have three closets.

Kitchens have been updated with cherry wood cabinets, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, dishwashers and built-in microwaves. Kitchens also have built-in desks.

Views. The views are limited by surrounding buildings.

Amenities, services, policies

The Van der Rohe has a more extensive amenities package than other buildings of its age.

There’s a 24-hour fitness room and resident lounge on the 2nd floor. The resident lounge includes a well-appointed kitchen with a media area for entertaining. The building has an on-site laundry facility with dry cleaning services available.

The resident lounge opens up to a 12,000 square foot deck. The deck includes multiple seating areas and lounge chairs along with grilling stations.

The Van der Rohe has on-site management and maintenance. Garage parking is available in the building. Street parking is scarce in the neighborhood. Cats are welcome; dogs aren’t.

The location

The Van der Rohe is on a busy residential street in Lakeview, just north of the Lincoln Park neighborhood. It’s an attractive location, close to the park and a wide selection of bars, restaurants and neighborhood shops, and a block away from Saint Joseph Hospital.

Shopping. The Van der Rohe has good proximity to grocery shopping.

For starters, there’s a Go Grocer across the street from the building. There’s a 7-Eleven a block west on Diversey.

Trader Joe’s on Diversey and Walmart Neighborhood Market on Broadway are a few short blocks from the building. The Walmart has a pharmacy and there’s also a Walgreens at Clark and Diversey.

Anyone setting up housekeeping for the first time will appreciate having Bed Bath & Beyond a few short blocks west.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment.
There’s a good selection of bars and restaurants along Clark St and Broadway St north and south of Diversey, but there are also a number of options along Diversey and nearby in the park.

Grill in the Park is a little-noticed spot to grab a quick bite when the weather’s good. The North Pond is a highly-rated restaurant in a tranquil, beautiful setting.

Duffy’s Tavern, Pars Cove and Miss Asia are just a few of the venues you’ll find clustered along Diversey just southwest of the Van der Rohe. The popular Yolk is at Pine Grove and Diversey. Expect a wait for breakfast on weekends.

Chipotle, Starbucks and Potbelly are also on Diversey, within a short walk of the Van der Rohe.

Century Centre Cinema is just north of Diversey on Clark St.

Parks, recreation.
Lincoln Park has too many attractions to list.

The Zoo, the Conservatory and its gardens, the landmark Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and other Lincoln Park draws are all within walking distance of the building.

Active recreation opportunities are abundant, some of them unexpected. Fly fishing lessons, for example, are available at nearby North Pond in the park and the golf driving range at Diversey is open year-round. There are clay tennis courts and miniature golf adjacent to the driving range. With a little bit of luck you might strike up a friendship with someone who has a boat in Diversey Harbor.

The park also offers endless opportunities for quiet relaxation.

Transportation. The Van der Rohe’s access to public transportation is good, but not great.

The #151 bus stops a block from the building and connects to the Loop via Michigan Ave. Other bus routes are a short walk from the building. The nearest CTA train stop, at Diversey, is a 15-minute walk from the Van der Rohe.

Taxi service is nearly always available outside the building. Several Zipcar car-sharing locations are nearby.

Access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid is inconvenient, and can be a source of major misery during peak hours.
