View north from Del Prado in Hyde Park, Chicago IL

The sun made a brief appearance just as I was wrapping up a sponsored video tour of the Del Prado apartments, which are currently undergoing renovation in Hyde Park.

The view north, overlooking Harold Washington Park and Lake Michigan, is one of the best in Hyde Park.

Mac Apartments is anticipating August move-ins, with studio to 2-bedrooms ranging in price from $1,005 to $1,630 on the 10th floor.

  • It’ll be nice to get this building occupied again. The old public spaces were great – what is going to happen with them?

  • Sheridan B,

There’s intensive restoration work underway in the public spaces. David Gwinn, the architect who showed me around, said part of the effort is archaeological. They have, for example, re-opened some interesting spaces that had been blocked off or had ceilings dropped adjacent to the lobby.

Mac is seeking a restaurant operator for the grand ballroom, which has the great Palladian windows overlooking the park.

I’ll be posting video of those spaces within the next couple of days.

  • Those were offices, they used to be pretty nasty. I think the ballroom was the Hyde Park Art Center for years (fond memories). Several of the old hotels in Hyde Park (and the HP Bank too) had rooftop restaurants.

  • The Del Prado was home to the House of Eng, a Chinese restaurant. Here’s video shot in the Eng space:

  • In perusing the web the other day, our daughter found your website on the Del Prado Hotel and the House of Eng South Restaurant in Hyde Park. As the original owner of the House Of Eng South restaurant and Key Club in the Del Prado Hotel, I found your video of May 17, 2011 very interesting as it brought back many great memories and stories. Again many thanks.
