Jeff Heilbrunn grew up in Chicago’s South Shore community area, but he was never allowed inside one of the neighborhood’s most distinctive sites: the South Shore Country Club. The country club, located on the shore of Lake Michigan just east of Lake Shore Drive and north of South Shore Drive, was closed to Jews and African Americans throughout its 70-year history.
The Country Club — now called the South Shore Cultural Center — is a part of the Chicago Park District and is open to the public. Heilbrunn, however, had never taken a look at the club from inside its walls. In February 2010, during a tour of South Shore with YoChicago.com’s Joe Askins, Heilbrunn got his first chance to see the grounds of this landmark.
