Tulip mania outside 600 Lake Shore Drive

Buzz Ruttenberg, the developer of 600 Lake Shore Drive, is well known both for his devotion to the visual arts and for having a puckish sense of humor.

When I visited a broker open house at 600 yesterday, the tulip beds fronting the building along Lake Shore Drive were in full bloom. There were more tulips, by far, than I’ve seen anywhere else in Chicago. There were enough tulips to have me thinking tulip mania, and wondering whether Ruttenberg planted them as a playful allusion to the recent real estate bubble.

Only three units remain available for sale in the two-tower luxury high-rise, making it one of the most successful projects of the past few years.
