Two new Lake View apartment projects on Halsted Street

The new high-rise at 3750 N Halsted in Lake View was three stories out of the ground when I stopped by earlier today, and it should proceed quickly to its 12- to 15-story height.

The building is the first new rental high-rise in Lake View since the New York, now a condo, opened on Lake Shore Drive in 1987. With a 5th-floor pool deck, fitness center, dog run and other amenities it will be one of the very few full-amenity rental buildings in Lake View when it opens early next year.

A block south site clearance is underway for what a sign bills as “the Midwest’s first LGBTQ-friendly, affordable senior housing development.” I’d be interested in hearing how a sign with that verbiage isn’t advertising a discriminatory preference in violation of fair housing laws.

The senior housing site includes the old Town Hall District police station at the corner of Addison and Halsted. The District was once legendary for its corruption, including shaking down and harassing gay bars in the area. The building’s future use is deliciously ironic.
