We seem to be fixated on new housing developments with a vaguely prison-like feel today, so we thought it only fitting to take a ride past University Station, 1500 S Blue Island Ave, the 12-story former cold-storage warehouse that New West Realty is converting to an “industrial-strength” 231-unit loft building. According to New West’s web site, the Station is over 80% sold, so obviously the forbidding, windowless exterior isn’t putting anybody off. We’re interested to see if some of the unusual detailing on the building, pictured inside, will survive the rehab.
