We like to watch: Marshall Field Jr. Mansion

Marshall Field Jr. Mansion

When we last posted on the construction underway at the Marshall Field Jr. Mansion at 1919 S Prairie Ave, a debate erupted about historic preservation in the Prairie Avenue Historic District. Now that developer UrbanStreet Properties has added photos of the interiors to its Web site, you can get a look inside.

Originally purchased in 1890 by Marshall Field Sr. (who lived next door) for his newlywed son, the 30,000-square-foot building is being rehabbed and turned into six condos.

New appointments include individual security systems, hardwood floors (with some wall-to-wall carpeting), granite counters, stainless steel appliances, custom thermal-pane windows and an attached heated parking facility. Historic features include the preserved redstone-and-brick façade, a restored entry gate and fence, and original fireplaces.

Due to slight inflation over the years, buyers unfortunately won’t be getting the original price of $65,000 that Mr. Field paid for the home. Two- and three-bedroom units start in the 870s.
