The downtown Chicago apartment market will add a total of more than 5,000 new units this year and next year. Will all those new apartments find renters?
Who knows?
One thing we do know, according to a recent Pew Research report, is that the percentage of young adults living with their parents has increased sharply in the past 5 years after remaining relatively stable for 40 years.
A record number of 21 million 18 to 31-year olds are living with their parents and might represent a pool of pent-up demand for apartments if the economy improved enough for them to find employment.
