We had so much fun visiting The Lofts at 1800, we decided to continue south to check out a project we’d posted about recently, the Maduro Lofts at University Village, a new conversion at 1435 W 15th St. The project will include 108 one- and two-bedroom loft condos with 600 to 1,420 square feet and prices starting in the $190s. The building was once a manufacturing facility for American Cigar Stores and the development marks Bucktown-based Lipe Properties second major project in the area.
The building, which stretches half a city block at 15th Street, is one of the largest new loft developments to hit the surprisingly robust market for loft condominiums (“surprisingly” only because loft projects dwindled to a trickle for a few years there). It’s hard to tell how the project will shake out at this early stage, but the building’s floor plate – quite long and not unmanageably deep – should make it well suited for residential conversion.
