YoChicago’s video walk through the Ferris Bueller house

Last August I spent nearly two hours shooting photos and video at what, in deference to the listing agent’s wishes, we referred to in the above video as “the Ben Rose house,” after the name of its original owner. The home, built in 1953, together with an outlying pavilion built in 1974, has been described as the most important modernist residence in Chicagoland.

Writer and architecture critic Philip Berger joined me and offers his perspective on the home and pavilion in the video. We delegated the task of exploring and photographing the steep ravine at the edge of the property to my son Jordan.

Chicago Business is reporting that the Highland Park home, which is more commonly referred to as “the Ferris Bueller house,” has been sold after five years on the market. The home was listed for $2.3 million in 2009. It had been reduced to $1.5 million at the time of our visit and finally sold for $1.06 million.

Our thanks to Coldwell Banker’s Meladee Hughes for affording us extended access to the home and grounds, and our condolences to the new owners. They’re likely to learn, as we did, that all too many people feel entitled to walk the grounds and press their faces against the glass façades of the modernist home and pavilion.
