455 West Wellington apartments, Lakeview East

by Joe Zekas on 5/29/14

455 West Wellington is a 5-story, contemporary elevator building at 455 W Wellington Ave in Lakeview East. The building was completed in 1972.

The apartments

455 West Wellington has a mix of studio and 1-bedroom apartments. Floor plans are available online. As of late May 2014, available studios rented for $945 to $1,015 and one-bedrooms from $1,280 to $1,350.

Apartments have a mix of wood-look floors and carpeting. Heat and air-conditioning are individually controlled. Kitchens have gas ranges and pantries, and a number of them have been updated in a variety of finishes.

The apartments have relatively spacious rooms. All of the apartments have well-defined dining areas and good closet space. Air-conditioning is via individual through-the-wall units.

Amenities, services, policies

455 West Wellington has limited amenities: a laundry room and on-site covered parking.

Cats are welcome; dogs aren’t.

The location

455 West Wellington is on a quiet one-way residential street in Lakeview East, just north of the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

The location is attractive: close to the park and a wide selection of bars, restaurants and neighborhood shops, and three short blocks from Saint Joseph Hospital.

Shopping. 455 West Wellington has good proximity to grocery shopping.

Trader Joe’s on Diversey and Walmart Neighborhood Market on Broadway are a few short blocks from the building. The Walmart has a pharmacy and there’s also a new Walgreens at Clark and Diversey.

The Market Place on Diversey, two short blocks south, is a spot that draws mixed reviews.

Anyone setting up housekeeping for the first time will appreciate having Discount Mattress, Bed Bath & Beyond and Affordable Portables a few short blocks away.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment.
There’s a huge variety of bars, restaurants and nightlife options within a short walk of the building.

Broadway, a block west of the building, is a pedestrian-friendly strip with dozens of eateries, bars and locally-owned retail shops.

Duffy’s Tavern, Pars Cove and Miss Asia are just a few of the venues you’ll find clustered along Diversey two short blocks south of the building. The popular Yolk opened recently at Pine Grove and Diversey. Expect a wait for breakfast on weekends.

Chipotle, Starbucks, Potbelly and Panera are also on Diversey.

Century Centre Cinema is just north of Diversey on Clark St, a few blocks away.

Parks, recreation.
Lincoln Park, which is a short walk east of 455 West Wellington, has too many attractions to list.

The Zoo, the Conservatory and its gardens, the landmark Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and other Lincoln Park draws are all within walking distance of the building.

Active recreation opportunities are abundant, some of them unexpected. Fly fishing lessons, for example, are available at nearby North Pond in the park and the golf driving range at Diversey is open year-round. There are clay tennis courts and miniature golf adjacent to the driving range. With a little bit of luck you might strike up a friendship with someone who has a boat in Diversey Harbor.

The park also offers endless opportunities for quiet relaxation.

Transportation. 455 West Wellington has good access to public transportation.

The #151 bus stops just east of the building and connects to the Loop via Michigan Ave. Other bus routes along Diversey and Broadway are a short walk from the building.

Taxi service is nearly always available along Broadway and Sheridan. Zipcar car-sharing locations and DIVVY bike stations are nearby.

Access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid is inconvenient, and can be a source of major misery during peak hours. The building has easy access to Lake Shore Drive.
