Daley kowtows to big-box retailers over minimum wage

Or, is Daley’s veto a wise decision essential to the city’s growth? Voice your thoughts at Yo’s big-box minimum wage thread over at our Retail forum. Unless Mayor Daley’s veto of the big-box minimum wage ordinance is successfully contested by Ald. Joe Moore (49th) and his allies, it will presumably give the green light to several developments that the retailers were threatening to pull the plug on. Target has been planning to anchor a $90 million shopping center on a vacant site at 119th Street and Marshfield Avenue and the $113 million Wilson Yard development in Uptown. Lowes was planning to build stores at 83rd Street and Stewart Avenue and at 79th Street and Cicero Avenue.
This particular cog in the Yo wheel thinks the retailers were full of it, and never intended to pull out of a market as buoyant as Chicago.
The mayor’s veto is supported by Ald. Shirley Coleman (16th), Ald. Danny Solis (25th) and Ald. George Cardenas (12th), according to a story today in RedEye. Interestingly, Ald. Freddrenna Lyle (16th) is talking about introducing a broader minimum wage ordinance.
