Booth Hansen wins nod for "canstruction" of man-sized baseball

A giant baseball made only of cans won Chicago architecture firm Booth Hansen nods for “Juror’s Favorite” and “People’s Choice” at Canstruction 2007, an exhibit on display at the Museum of Science and Industry through June 24.

The six-foot-high baseball is made from 4,200 cans of Bumble Bee Tuna, 300 cans of Hormel Canned Ham (for the red stitching of the baseball) and 160 jars of Jewel Creamy Peanut Butter, according to a statement from Booth Hansen. It rests on a field of 912 green Perrier water bottles.

The exhibit pitted 14 teams of architects and engineers against each other to see who could build the coolest can sculpture. Designers were forbidden to use any adhesive, so that the sculptures could be taken apart and donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository at the end of the exhibit.
